This hack does a bunch of stuff you aren't Supposed to do. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a hack, would it? It does some stuff (trust me) so just install it and try it. Full source is included.
Features (intentional or otherwise):
—You can see the desktop and icons on it.
—You can select items on the desktop.
—You can rename items on the desktop.
—You can hit key combinations.
—You can drag items (sort of).
